Keeping Him by Kennedy Fox

Published: September 20, 2018

**I received an ARC for an honest review**

I was really looking forward to this book and when I started reading it I did have a slight disappointment in the way the book was set up. The book starts out at Kiera and Trent’s wedding which is the next step from the cliffhanger in the previous book. But then it goes into the months previous and all I wanted was for it to go back into the present. I don’t mind flashbacks but really I just wanted the present. But that is my only beef with this novel. Like I loved everything else but the first few chapters that did this. The content was even great and important to the story. I just wasn’t a fan of the setup.

Kiera Young is going to marry the man of her dreams. Or so she thinks. She has always loved Jackson and thought he would be the man at the end of the aisle waiting for her but she got tired of waiting and through the wait she found Trent. She believed that he was the man she was meant to spend her life with but when he starts to keep things from her and is constantly jealous of Jackson she doesn’t know what to do. He isn’t the man she thought she was marrying and doesn’t know how to extract herself from it all.

Jackson Bishop is the wild child of the Bishop boys. He is also the man whore. All of his whoring ways were so that he wouldn’t have to think about how he can’t have the one woman he wants, Kiera. She has a hold on his heart and always has. The only person who doesn’t know that is Kiera and he’ll never tell her because he doesn’t think that he is good enough for her. But when given the choice of never telling her what she means to him and watching her marry a man that he knows isn’t good for her he chooses to tell her. Little does he expect everything that follows that one confession.

Beside the style issues that I mentioned previously the novel was really great and it was such a good end to the Bishop Brothers series. I particularly liked that it moved forward in time in the last couple of chapters not just the Epilogue so that we could see their relationship as it progresses. The novel had some unexpected turns to it and though you get inklings to events you never know how it’s going to turn out. That’s how I felt at least about Trent. I knew he was up to no good. Anyway, as the last book in the series there will be no more Bishop Brothers but plenty more from Kennedy Fox. It was a good ending to a short and sweet series.

—“It would really help my pride if you didn’t use the word cute near my dick.” -Jackson to Kiera—

Treoir Dragon Hoard by Dianna Love

Published: September 13, 2018

For my semi-usual preamble, I received this novel as ARC for an honest review (even though I would have bought and read it anyway).

Now that that is out of the way we can begin talking about Treoir Dragon Hoard! This book was so good. If you have been following the Belador series you know that the last novel ended with Cathbad the Druid and a dragon coming out of a lake in a cave. Well, I originally thought that this was one of Daegan’s sisters however (and a small spoiler here) it is not one of his sisters but someone much more interesting. This entire book was focused around Daegan’s hoard because all dragons have to have one. But that was the loose way to focus the book into one area.

We start out within the first couple of chapters wondering what has happened because Evalle has been kidnapped and her magic has been suppressed so she can’t heal herself. Storm (of course) is going berserk because they ripped the emerald out of Evalle’s chest so he has no way to find her. He is tired of people always going after his mate for some reason or another but in a good turn of events the leader of the Beladors is now on her side. Daegan is with Storm every step of the way in order to find Evalle and return her home. However, when things start to look grim they must take drastic measures to find her and this includes taking on the Tribunal and angry goddesses.

This book was so quick paced and interesting. I’m sure I say this a lot, but, I couldn’t put this book down and now I have to wait a year or so for the next one! Why?!?! Anyway, we are slowly learning more about Daegan and his family. He wants to know what happened to them when he was captured but it is slow gathering records from a time when few were kept. Now that he has established himself as the face and power behind the Beladors he will continue to help but he must find his family. In that vein he has named Brina and Tzader the rulers of Treoir which is so heart warming. Like the whole wedding scene is awesome! But there are so many more sub-stories I could talk about in this blog post that I won’t. You all will just have to read to find out what’s going on with Adrianna and Isak, Quinn and Reese, Tristan, and the rest of the gang. Keep an eye open for more Beledor fun!

Blood Ties by Quincy J. Allen

Published: October 11, 2015

I have finally read a book by the incredible Quincy J. Allen. I have met him several times and he is such a great person that I knew I needed to finally read one of his novels before I saw him again. This is the first novel in a trilogy and let me tell you it isn’t my usual cup of tea. It started out slow which made reading it seem like a chore but when it picked up it really picked up! The author describes the book as an Epic Western Steampunk Fantasy. And that description couldn’t be more accurate. That is everything this book is in a nice little nutshell.

This novel we follow Jake Lasater. He is a gunslinger that lives in Colorado after losing his legs and an arm in the war. However he knew a good Tinker who fitted him up with state of the art mechanical limbs and they even have a bit of magic thrown into them. He is approached for a job in San Francisco from a friend that he can never say “no” to. The last thing he wants is to return to San Fran but he clearly doesn’t have a choice. And considering that the job is for the Chinese Tong (think Chinese Triad) he is more than a little nervous. The last time he had a run in with that group he almost died. He isn’t too keen on a repeat.

This book was different than my normal fair as I stated but it piqued my interest. The steampunk world is fascinating and incorporating it into a novel is something that I haven’t read before. The book starts slow because we are given Jake’s back story and why he is like he is. Then it starts to pick up when he receives a job from an old friend and the journey to San Francisco isn’t without it’s excitement. Not to mention when they finally reach the city by the bay that they learn new things about the Tong that they never expected as well as about the assignment. It pays enough so they take it like any good gunslinger would do. It’s when they make it to San Francisco that the novel really really picked up to the point that I just wanted to keep reading though things got in the way. Like preparing for DragonCon. Yes, I go to that. So I have only read this first one but the second book is out and the third one should be out sometime in 2019. It is a trilogy and I like that I started it at least with the second book out because it ends on a crazy cliffhanger. I hope to have the second one read within the next couple of months but my book list exploded in September so keep an eye out for it. Hopefully by November. But seriously who knows.

Final item, each chapter starts with a quote either by Jake or about Jake. Which I think is really cool and inventive. Some are funny and some not so much but they make for a great entrance into the next chapter.

Note: Keep an eye on my social media pages for a giveaway that will include a free digital copy of this book!! I have a couple in the works that will be coming soon!!

—“You can make a deal with the Devil and trust he’ll keep his end of the bargain. But any deal you make better be worth your immortal soul.” -Jake Lasater, p.249—

Fighting for What’s His by Laura Kaye

Published: September 7, 2018

I received an ARC of this awesome novel for an honest review. Am I anything but honest with y’all? That was rhetorical. Anyway, I love all books Laura Kaye and even though the first book of this series was good it didn’t rock me. This book however was better than the first one. I love books that have to do with sexy military men and the women who are strong enough to help them.

We met Billy Parrish in the first novel as one of the veterans in the Warrior Fight Club. We didn’t know his story then but with this book we get a greater look at what makes him tick. After being discharged, he had to figure out what to do with his life and so he decided to use his skills to be a private investigator. It wasn’t his life’s calling but it was something. When Billy was discharged it was for the burns that cover half of his body and he is also rocking a serious case of survivor’s guilt. He wants to find something that will make his life meaningful so that he can properly honor those that were killed but so far he has found nothing. That is until he meets Shayna and he is instantly attracted to her. He actually feels kind of bad about bitching to his buddies about her staying with him, when she is nothing like he assumed. However, he needs to stay away from her. Her oldest brother is his best friend and he will not hurt him by going after Shayna. Even if she could be the greatest thing to happen to him.

Shayna Curtis got a job with the Washington Gazette which is why she needed to move to DC. Her brother called in a favor with a buddy of his and so she is staying with Billy until she can find a place of her own. Only she has always had a crush on Billy and apparently that crush has not gone away like she thought. A teenager has permanently moved into her head whenever she is talking to him. And that is unacceptable. After a getting to know Billy and his friends and spending time with him she thinks there might actually be a really good future there between them until he pulls away. Which prompts her to start finding her own apartment which is harder than anyone would think in DC. There are some grade A wackadoodles out there. She finds a safe nice place to stay with a friend who just happens to be a guy and Billy freaks out. She doesn’t know what to do.

This book was a very quick read. I think I read it like a day and a half and that was with having to work. If you liked the first novel, you’ll love this one. We get to see more of the characters from the Warrior Fight Club and learn a bit more about their stories. Which will make the next one even better. Guys, I am so excited for Sean and Daniela’s book!! It’s going to be so hot! I love a good enemies to lovers story.

More on this novel first though. Shayna’s insults are pure gold! I love a sassy woman (probably because I am one) and the insults she gives to Billy and her brother are priceless. Like honestly, once you read this novel you will see what I’m talking about. Also, make sure to check out Laura Kaye’s page and my facebook page for a rafflecopter giveaway for the release of this novel. It should be going on for the next couple of days. So go try to win free things!!

—“‘Stop thinking about the stupid fuckstick, Shay,’ she whispered to herself. But, then, of course, She. Could. Only. Think. About. Billy’s. Fuck. Stick. For. Fuck’s. Sake.” -Shayna—

When Tinker Met Bell by Alethea Kontis

Published: September 26, 2017

This is the second book in the Harmswood Academy series and I liked it better than the first one. This short novel in a nutshell is a quirky rewrite of the Labyrinth. Y’all know that movie right? One of David Bowie’s finest moments!

This novel we get to see the Fae Bellamy again and it starts out in all her wonderful barista glory. She makes sure that everyone gets an extra shot of happiness in each cup. That is everyone but her best friend Tinker who as a goblin is horribly allergic to fairies. She has been best friends with the goblin since he arrived at Harmswood. However, she doesn’t realize that she is in love with him until he is named the heir to the goblin throne just out of the blue. That means that she could lose him any day and she doesn’t know how she will live without him. Not only that but she won’t live without him. Whose on board for a trip to Goblin City?

Tinker never wanted to be king. He was happy with his life at school with his friends and especially with Bell. He was content with loving Bellamy and never touching her but now he has to leave her forever. But an unexpected perk of becoming the new goblin king is that he is no longer allergic to fairies. And he isn’t green. Or gangly anymore. These are big perks for a teenage boy in love with a fairy. But when he is suddenly sucked out of Harmswood and into the Goblin City he has to figure out a way to get back to his friends, his home, and most importantly, his girl.

This novella was so cute and I was happy to continue with the students from the Harmswood Academy. As a fan of the movie the Labyrinth I knew I needed to read this novel and I’m sure glad I did. The writing was interesting and engaging and even whimsical. This is only my second time with the Nocturne Falls universe and I think I’ll stick to the trilogy of the Harmswood Academy. For now at least!

—“Permission to kiss the king?” -Bellamy to Tinker—

Cowboy, Cross My Heart by Donna Grant

Published: August 28, 2018

This is the first book I have ever received from NetGalley. Honestly, I was kind of skeptical considering I wasn’t a huge fan of the first novel. It was good but it wasn’t phenomenal. Even though this one never hit the phenomenal level either (few ever do) this novel was much better than the first one and I actually enjoyed it a lot. It did take me a while to get into the novel but within the first couple of chapters I was hooked. I want to start though with a trigger warning for people. This novel deals with sexual abuse and I just want readers to be aware of that.

Brice Harper may be remembered as the cattle rustling kid from the first novel. Well, this novel is based 12 years later and he is now a man who has is own past. Having grown up with a Navy SEAL as a brother-in-law he has learned a few things and then he had his own stint in the military. Now he is home with his dream of being a rancher and being the best damn twin roper that the circuit had ever seen. Him and his brother are a team and one that rarely loses. However, when he sees Naomi in the stands one night he can’t get her out of his mind. Then he saves her and her friend from being attacked. From that day forward Brice knows that he needs this woman like he’s never needed anything. But when not is all as it seems in the rodeo circuit he needs to get to the bottom of all that is happening in order to save Naomi’s life.

Naomi Pierce is a photographer who lives in Washington, DC. She is back in her hometown in Texas because her best friend, Whitney, is a rodeo queen and she is determined to support her. But her friend is acting strange and when they are attacked she swears she doesn’t know who did it but Naomi knows when she is lying. Through trying to figure out what is going on at the rodeo she has found an unlikely ally in Brice. He is determined to help and protect her. Even going so far as to take her to the family ranch to keep her safe. He is everything she has ever wanted in a man but can she leave her life in DC for a new one back home? Does she really have a choice in not returning home after everything Whitney has gone through? These are tough questions for one person to answer in a couple of days.

There were parts of this novel that just made me so disgusted and angry but those were the emotions that I’m sure Donna Grant was trying for. These came out in the scenes that showed the group who were behind raping the rodeo pageant contestants and the chaperones who facilitated it. Honestly, (and here is a big SPOILER) I was glad that the chaperone died. She facilitated the rape of a girl she was supposed to protect. But thankfully in a novel (unlike the real world) the bad guys do get it in the end. Though everyone is a little worse for wear at that point. All of the emotions this novel elicited had me wrung out by the time I was done with it but it has also made me think that the next one will be even better because they just keep going up.

—“If you shoot me, I get to shoot you.” -Caleb to Brice—
